Apple have officially released the iPhone 5s on the Friday, 20 September. The 5s was released alongside the iPhone 5c which is priced significantly lower. Both phones will run iOS 7, with the iPhone 5s having higher techincal specifications.
The iPhone 5s is a modern, sleek smartphone which combines aesthetics, performance and usability all into one. In the face of stiff competition from Samsung, HTC and Nokia the 5s is packing a few features that make it stand out from the crowd.
The first thing to note about the 5s is that it runs on Apples A7 chip, which is the worlds first 64-Bit processor. Previously all other iPhone preceding the 5s ran a 32-bit system which could handle up to 4 gigabytes of RAM. 62-bit system can have more than 4GBs of Ram, and offer faster speeds and better performance. It also lays the platform for future devices to run on 64 bit architecture instead of 32 bit.
The next notable feature from the 5s, is the introduction of Touch ID fingerprint scanning technology. This technology allows the iPhone 5s to store a users fingerprint on the A7 chip. Once the iPhone gets acquainted with a users fingerprint, passwords can be unlocked via fingerprint instead of numeric and alphabetic input. For users that have privacy concerns, Apple have said that the A7 chip does not communicate with Apple servers or any other servers, and stores the fingerprint data on local storage only. Since this technology is still sparkling new, the upsides and downsides are still yet to be known.
Previously all other iPhone models where offered in two colors, namely black and white. This has changed with the 5s being offered in Grey, Silver and Gold. Apple have also produced a uniquely design leather case that is designed precisely to fit the 5s. The leather case, features a color matched microfiber lining on the inside to further protect the 5s.
An interesting specification to look is the dual core processor of the iPhone 5s. The dual core processor apparently kills all competitors including the mighty Samsung S4, which packs a Oct Core processor in benchmarks tests. With 1 GB of onboard RAM on the 5s, people will wonder how that compares to the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, which has 3 GBs of RAM. A good comparison can be found at Anandtech.com.
Built into the iPhone 5s, is the M7 motion coprocessor. This chip serves as a helper chip to gather motion data from the gyroscope, accelormoter and and compass. This information is then used for efficiency and performance on the device.
Apple have preloaded the 5s with iOS 7, which in turn introduces many new software features. The new operating system is designed enhance the user experience making it the phone more usable, and enjoyable. Some new features include the control center, Air drop and smarter multitasking.
The introduction of the previously mentioned features, simply spell innovation. The 64 bit processing capabilities aswell as the new Touch ID fingerprint scan could mark a new turn in the way smarthphones are developed.
