Apple have reported that their App Store has seen over 40 billion downloads, of which half of that occured in 2012 alone. The month of December 2012, saw 2 billion downloads itself. According to Apple, the App Store has over 500 million active accounts with over 775,000 apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Payouts to developers worldwide by Apple, has numbered in the billions of Dollars worldwide. Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and services Eddy Cue had this to say, “It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store.”
The App store is geared towards monetizing applications, wich in-app purchases, subscriptions and advertising being made available to developers. Customers owning an iPhone, iPad or iPod have access to over 775,00 apps across 155 countries worldwide. Apps are categorized into in 23 categories, including newsapaers, magazines, games, news, sports and finance. Many of the apps are available for free, but others are paid for.
Leading companies across the world, continue to invest in the future of iOS including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and Marvel. Smaller companies such as Imangi studios(run by a husband and wife team), who released Temple Run saw their app being downloaded over 75 million times. The future of Apple and the App Store certainly looks bright, and the rush seems to only have began.
