iPhone 6 Goes on Sale – 19th September 2014

The iPhone 6 will go on sale today 19th September 2014, with pre-orders for the device been taken from the 12th of September 2014. Like it’s predecessors, the iPhone 6 enters the smartphone market with high expectations placed on it, being branded with the logo “Bigger than bigger. ” Apple who are currently in second place with 11.7% of smartphone market share, have to compete against the army of Android devices who occupy 84.7% the smartphone market. In 2007, Apple launched the first iPhone. Steve Jobs CEO at the time said, “We’ve designed something wonderful for your hand, just wonderful.” He was right in saying that. Sales for iPhone 6, are expected to add 1% per month to China’a export growth for the rest of 2014, which is astonishing considering the iPhone is just one product. This makes better sense, when you consider that fact that on the rear of each and every iPhone, is the line “Designed By Apple, Assembled in China”.

Below is a comparison between the new iPhone 6 and the old Samsung Galaxy S3. This side-by-side comparison reveals that Apple is playing catch up in terms of hardware. You decide for yourself, if the iPhone 6 qualifies as a ‘high-end’ smartphone or not. See the full comparison here.

The iPhone 6 is the 8th iteration in the iPhone line of smartphones, with 7 previous iPhone models(iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S) being produced since 2007. The original iPhone had a 3.5 inch multi-touch display, with aluminum casing and plastic back accent. The new iPhone 6 will be available in Space Grey, Silver and Gold variants and will ship with iOS 8 pre-installed. If you have one of the following devices, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5C they will also receive an update for the new iOS 8.

Apple have maintained their use in quality materials, when manufacturing the iPhone 6. The device is made with anodized aluminum and stainless steel, with the front glass being curved around the edges leaving no sharp edges. With a weight of 129g and depth of 6.9mm the iPhone 6 is very light in the hand, at the same time maintains being amazingly thin.

The iPhone 6 features a 4.7 inch IPS LCD display, which pushes out 326 pixels per inch with a resolution of 1334 x 750. The iPhone 6 display is essentially bigger and better, than previous iPhone models, most notably the iPhone 5s which had a 4 inch display. The bigger display means that, more apps can run in landscape orientation, higher contrast, more accurate color and wider viewing angles.. Although the screen is oleophobic coated and shatterproof, it doesn’t cover up the fact the iPhone 6’s display has a pixel density of 326 ppi. This number is minute, when compared to the LG G3 (534 ppi) and HTC One M8(440 ppi).

An interesting choice made by Apple when designing the iPhone 6 was it’s camera . Located at the back of the device, the main rear camera is still only an 8 megaPixel camera like that of the iPhone 5s. The iSight camera includes a new sensor, and support for new video features such as 1080 HD @ 60 fps and slow motion recording at 240 fps. The reason why it comes into question is simply because it protrudes out from the top of the iPhone. But this poses a practical problem, when leaving the iPhone 6 on it’s back, the camera lens will be the uneven edge potentially posing quite a dilemma. At the front, there is a 1.2 Megapixel front facing camera, that has an f/2.2 aperture, with support burst and HDR modes.

Apple have included a dual-core A8 system-on-chip built on 64-bit architecture, and a M8 motion co-processor in the iPhone 6. The new A8 chip is said to bring a 25 % increase in performance and 50% increase in graphic performance. It works in collaboration with the new sensors found on the iPhone, such as the Barometer amongst others to collect and respond to data. The graphics processor, which is responsible for graphics and smooth user interface is PowerVR GX6650(hexa-core graphics). A new technology called Metal lets developers create highly detailed console-style games for the iPhone 6. Metal is optimized to allow the CPU and GPU to work together in delivering ,more precise graphics.

In 2012, Apple Inch purchased a company called AuthenTec which specialized in fingerprint reading and

identification. The iPhone includes a fingerprint scanner, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, ambient light and proximity sensor. The barometer senses air pressures to determine the users elevation. This means that the device will know when you are climbing stairs, or free falling through the sky. An accelerometer measures the distance for running and walking and works with the iPhone 6 GPS to accurately capture your movements. Finally a Gyroscope detects when you are driving, or taking panoramic photos or playing games to react to a users movements. These sensors will integrate with the M8 processor and iOS 8 with new APIs such as the HealthKit API.

Storage wise, Apple have maintained there stance on excluding a memory card slot on the iPhone 6. The device is available in three variants namely the 16GB, 64 GB and 128 GB with 1GB RAM across all three. Cloud storage is available by Apple through iCloud which can be used to sync photos, music, videos amongst other things.

LTE support on the iPhone 6 has been supplemented, with support for over 20 bands of LTE(7 more than iPhone 5s), which Apple claims is more than any other smartphone. Apple Pay is new mobile payment and digital wallet service meant to allow users to make payments via their Apple devices. The iPhone 6, includes support for Near-Field Communication which will work with Apple Pay to allow users to make payments wirelesslly.

Something that stands out, is Apple’s decision to include USB v2.0 in the iPhone 6 when the current standard is USB v3.0(Samsung Galaxy S5). USB version 2 operates at 480 Mbps which was excellent, until USB version 3 made it’s appearance on November 2008 being able to operate 10 times faster than USB 2 at 4.8 Gigabytes per second.
