The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is a new android(Android 4.4.4 “KitKat”) smartphone, manufactured by Samsung Electronic. Initially announced on 13 August 2014, the Alpha is expected to available in South Africa later this month (September 2014).

Design

Samsung have always been criticized for their use of poly carbonate materials on their premium devices, such as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S5. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha marks a shift in the way Samsung manufactures smartphones in that it is the first Galaxy smartphone to incorporate a metallic frame.

Samsung Electronics CEO JK Shin explained that the Alpha was “built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market.” This has translated into into the Galaxy Alpha which happens to be the Samsung Electronics thinnest smartphone at 7mm thick.

The physical appearance of Alpha, is certainly one of it’s strong points. The Alpha is constructed with premium materials, encased in a high quality metal frame. This however does not compromise the weight of the device weighing in at 115g making it feel very light. The screen is a 4.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen, slightly  smaller than than that of the Galaxy S5. A metallic frame and AMOLED display allow the Alpha to be prone to scratches, but as we know people expect premium devices these days to be waterproof and dustproof. Unfortunately, from what we have gathered, the Galaxy Alpha will not be IP 67(waterproof and dustproof) certified.

Technical Specifications

International versions of the Galaxy Alpha will feature Samsung’s new Exynos 5430 system-on-chip, with eight cores (1.8GHz Cortex-A57 and 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53). What makes the the Exynos 5430 different is that it is the first mobile system on chip to use a 20 nanometer HKMG manufacturing process. In addition to this, the Alpha will be the first device to incoporate Intel’s XMM7260 modem for category 6 LTE support.

The display on the Alpha is 4.7 inch AMOLED display, with a resolution of 1280 * 720 pixels @ 312 pixels per inch. This statistic is not a good one, when compared to the pixel density of LG 3( 534 pixels per inch) – which leaves the Alpha looking like it came to us via a time travelling machine from the past. On the same note, can the human eye really enjoy a pixel density of 500 ppi and greater ? Yes we can, and if LG have it why don’t Samsung( both are Korean Manufacturers).

A 12 megapixel camera adorns the rear of the device, whilst a 2.1 megapixel camera sits at the front with a backilluminated sensor. Real-time HDR support allows for bright and vivid photographs to be taken, even in bad lighting conditions. The 4.7 inch Super AMOLED HD display, allows one to appreciate the quality of the Alpha’s advanced camera.

When battery get’s low on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, user’s can switch on Ultra power saving mode. This will allow you to squeeze out what little juice you might have left. The Galaxy Alpha’s battery, is a Li-Ion 1860 mAh battery which is a little worrying considering this a smartphone with a HD display and Oct Processor making it power hungry. Memory is limited to 32 GB, with lack of a memory card support which is something we hope Samsung did not pick up from Apple.

Summary

The Galaxy S5 Alpha, with it’s premium metal build, Oct Core processor, Android 4.4.4 Support and Category 6 LTE support all qualify this device as a competitor at the high end, of the smartphone market. The beautiful physical appearance, coupled with the minute weight allow the Galaxy Alpha to feel light and robust. On the downside, the Alpha does not include a memory card slot, is not IP 67 certified and makes use of USB v2.0 instead of the current standard of USB v3.0. It display, great as it may be falls short when compared to the Quad HD display of the LG G3.

In terms of sociology and zoology, ‘Alpha’ denotes the dominant animal or human in a particular group. Is the Samsung Galaxy Alpha the dominate smartphone out there? Simply put, no it is not.
